Solar Landfill

Utilising sealed landfill as a base for a cleaner energy future

To continue to push the boundaries of innovation and driven by a zero-waste waste future, the Emirates Waste to Energy Company embarked on the Solar Landfill project. With the launch of the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant and Sharjah soon becoming the region’s first zero-waste city, the landfill currently being used will no longer be needed. To utilize this land, the Emirates Waste to Energy Company will seal the landfill and install a series of solar arrays capable of producing 120 MW of power.

Overcoming hurdles for innovation and impact

Finding productive uses for closed landfills is a global industry issue. Stringent environmental monitoring and remediation processes can take up to 30 years. By redeveloping the landfill into a solar farm, the Emirates Waste to Energy Company is adding to the renewable energy mix in Sharjah and the UAE, while making a positive impact on the environment as well as the economy.
